Racheli Kalian

Academic Education:

  • BSc – Marine Biology, Ruppin Academic Center (Michmoret),
    Israel (2016-2019)
  • MSc candidate– Marine Biology, University of Haifa, Israel (2022-present)

Background:

Racheli has started her MSc with Professor Dani Tchernov, and Professor Yossi Yovel from Tel Aviv University, as part of the Deep MED Research Lab. Before beginning her masters, she participated in several marine biology internships in research stations abroad, having additional personal projects in the field of marine animals’ acoustics. For her masters thesis, along with her supervisors, she chose a project about the bioacoustics of the reefs in the Red Sea, Eilat, where it has not been explored yet.

Current Research:

In her MSc work, she aims to assess whether the health of the reef can be detected only by passive acoustic monitoring, by comparing different states of reef’s health, using underwater acoustic recorders and cameras. This knowledge will help in evaluating the impact of noise pollution and other anthropogenic effects on the reefs in Eilat, and a result, the data gathered from this research can potentially contribute to future conservation and restoration efforts of these rich and important environments.
